Growing up I was NEVER a hot sauce fan. Anything spicy on or near my food was out of the question. It wasn't until college I started trying out spicy stuff here and there and I realized how much flavor it can add to a dish.
I started making hot sauce with my boyfriend because he's loves all hot sauces. He would add it to his eggs every morning and always put it on chicken, which re-introduced it to me. I started liking the sweeter hot sauces, but I didn't always like the ingredients in them. That's when we decided to make our own and both realized fun it was. We experimented with different fruits, but adding kiwi was out favorite. Below is the most recent batch we made, sweetening it with only fruit. I like my hot sauces a little sweeter but feel free to change it up a bit by adding more hot peppers or less fruit!
Homemade Hot Sauce
2 tbs extra virgin olive oil
1 sweet onion
2 red bell peppers
2 cherry bomb peppers, or habanero
5 cloves of garlic
1.5 cups distilled vinegar
4 clementines, peeled
3 kiwis, peeled
Chop the onion, peppers, garlic and tomatoes.
Add the chopped onions and red bell peppers to a pot with the olive oil and allow to simmer until lightly brown. Then add the vinegar, tomatoes, and garlic and simmer until the tomatoes break down.
Add in the chopped hot peppers and cook for another 5 minutes.
Transfer mixture to a food processor and add the fruit. Process until smooth.
Pour mixture back into pot and allow it all to sit together for 2 hours before you can it.
*We don’t strain ours because we like the texture of it but if you don't like pulp than you can just strain it with a cheese cloth. I really like the nut milk bag listed on this page! The leftover veggies after straining would be a good addition to a soup or omelette too.
